  • Heather’s Vlog “Heather checks out getfanged.com and Grampires?” | A Web Series Review on The Watch List

    A Vampire Comedy Web Series

    4 Swirlies

“I got this new leather jacket. The guy who was wearing it was delicious.”

This is the second episode in a row from the web series Heather’s Vlog that is Heather and her Dad talking about internet stuff.

There’s about half or three quarters of a minute at the end that’s vintage Heather’s Vlog, and is hilarious. The first half, they’re checking out getfanged.com, which, it turns out, is a real thing. And it is more a chance to rehash jokes about Facebook than anything really fresh. Once they start getting rolling on confusing Tony Danza for Billy Crystal, it takes off into the types of laughs that this series is capable of.

I think both the previous video and this are designed to bring in new views by connecting with other popular stuff. It can be a smart of promoting yourself online, but I don’t think it makes the best fodder from story or comedy.

  • Heather’s Vlog “Heather and Her Dad Watch Rebecca Black Video” | A Web Series Review on The Watch List

    A Vampire Comedy Web Series

    3 Swirlies

“Back in the day, you had to work to be famous. Like Aretha Franklin and Pee Wee Herman.”

We’ve been so focused on keeping on top of the current shows that we are following, that I forgot to keep an eye on one of my favourite series, Heather the Vampire! I see there’s been a few posts since Heather’s return, and here’s the first one.

I gotta say, maybe I’m in a bad mood today, because I wasn’t blown away, despite how excited I was to see it. There’s some funny bits, but really they’re just making fund of Rebecca Black and not doing their usual shtick. I think maybe that was the point, I get the feeling this is a micro-episode, not a full on episode. It is kinda of my fault – I’m sure when the video was first posted was much closer to the debut of Rebecca Black’s video than it is today.

Anyway, the world still hasn’t gotten over Rebecca Black, so do yourself a favour and watch Heather and her dad’s take on it. Like I say, there’s some funny bits.

And I look forward to Heather’s next video.

  • Vampire Zombie Werewolf Ep.9 “Meta-Morphosis” | A Web Series Review on The Watch List

    A Comedy Horror Web Series

    3 Swirlies

“Half vampire, half werewolf and one third zombie?”

There’s a really cool special effect at the end of this final episode, I honestly have no idea how they did that.

There’s a few really funny jokes in this episode, especially with the Vampires justifying their existence to the producer. My favourtie parts of this series was the producer dealing with the blood thirsty vampires, especially finding out his buddy was a vampire.

Where this series didn’t connect with me was all the stuff about web series. I can’t even really say why, except that I felt like it was out of place with everything else that was going on, and it was only kind of a MacGuffin to get the plot in gear… but the story never really evolved beyond it, like a typical MacGuffin. I never cared if they came up with a web series concept, but I did care if the producer got eaten by the vampires. On the same thought, I didn’t care if he got eaten by Tad and Bunny, because then the story would be over, and also the producer did very little to avoid being eaten by Tad and Bunny, while with the vampires it felt like a very present danger that he was struggling to avoid.

But KATR Productions did make it look and sound nice - a very slick and well produced project. I haven’t gone back and watched their previous effort yet, Life From the Inside, which is spoken about very highly from web series fans.

If someone from KATR Productions is reading this, we’d love it if you could leave a comment talking a little about “the head shot” and how you achieved it, or maybe just a hint about what your next series might be?

  • Blood and Bone China Ep.4 “Devil in the Potteries” | A Web Series Review on the Watch List

    A Victorian Vampire Web Series

    4 Swirlies

“Their souls were stolen! Stolen away by the very devil himself.”

Whoa! Blood and Bone China pulls this one outta nowhere.

I’ve been a little hard on this series, but this episode, while it still has some rough areas, really makes good on the suspense and atmosphere of a good Victorian horror tale.

To get them out of the way, a few complaints. The lighting was set up to give you that pre-electricity feel, making the scenes on the dark side. The design of the rooms in the mansion were quite ornate and I had a had time making out all the details. I was also confused by the geography of it all, where did Anna go after being propositioned so forwardly? Each location she was in looked like the one before, until she ended up in some hidden tunnel. And the one drawer that she opened had some kind of clue? Way too convenient.

There’s also the matter of the invitation. They had to lie to get inside (in the previous episode) but then the first thing someone says to him is “You’re the new doctor. What’s your name?” It didn’t seem to track, story wise.

There were small things like that that nagged at me, but overall I really enjoyed this episode. Lots of new faces, lots of mystery and suspense. It kept me guessing the whole time. Were all these people vampires? What was going to happen with Anna? And that creepy kid isn’t going to be just a creepy kid, is it? The opening song is still awesome, and the wardrobe is the real star of the series.

I know that some shows need time to get up to speed, especially serialized shows, but I don’t think that’s what happened here. I think that this is the first episode with any real jeopardy, any real stakes or story. It is also the first time we see a vampire since the teaser of episode 1. I hope they can sustain the tension, and we get into some vampire fighting, otherwise I’m worried that the series will return to the type of episode that led up to this one.

  • Vampire Zombie Werewolf Ep.7 “The Great Vampsby” | A Web Series Review on The Watch List

    A Comedy Horror Web Series

    3 Swirlies

“Just because some asshole bit me, I gotta like blood?”

This show is picking up nicely.

The main body of the episode had a nice pacing, with the Vampire/Zombie/Werewolf darting in and out of the scene and the producer having a chat with an old buddy. And then the ending had the turn that I was waiting for, that should really push the story through the rest of the series.

I haven’t had a chance to watch this series in a while, and what struck me was how well lit it is. It has always been a well produced series; the opening and closing titles are nicely done. My favourite character so far was the vampire hating vampire that the producer meets. He comes across as earthy, but he’s still talking about vampire myths - debunking them with total disdain.

Oh, I’m starting to think they had me fooled - the character Balthazane the vampire has his own blog reviewing vampire web series. I thought he was a real reviewer who focused on vampire shows, and they hired him to be in their show. Now I’m starting to think that he was a character and they made his blog up as a promotional platform for the show. If that’s true, it is kinda brilliant. Not only to help increase the show’s discoverability, but as a marketing gimmick. I’ve written about it twice now. It’s Lonely Girl 15 all over again!

“More and more people have gone missing recently. Nothing’s ever found.”

[NOTE: When I first posted this I totally forgot to put in the video! Talk about bone headed. Sorry, Blood and Bone China guys! I have added the video, and I'll repost so that people can see it!]

Here in the third episode, we meet another main character. But we haven’t seen ourselves a vampire since the hints of them in the teaser. This episode is chock full of exposition, but very short on story. I did notice that episode 4, the next one, is the last episode for now. Although their website says the next episode will launch on April 17th. And I did see on twitter a few days back that they were looking for extras to be vampires. So that sounds hopeful.

As always, the costumes are the best part.

“Moving in? Oh, I would just stake her right now.”

More troubles for our vampire hitman as he gets ready for his mother-in-law to move in.

This is very serialized show. Many web series are. I wonder if maybe that’s one of the reasons that web series in general have a hard time breaking through to the mainstream - they’re too short for a real self contained story, but they are often released on a TV schedule.

    Just musing. Thoughts?

“Something about the microwave interacts with our lycanthropy”

I had to pause and check back to make sure I didn’t miss an episode. Very bold and dramatic start to this episode, if a bit confusing for me.

This was strong episode for a couple of reasons. One, finally the web producer has some nice lines, instead of just looking terrified - and he actually tries to do something to get out of his predictament. Two, the vampires arrive. There’s a nice gag where there’s a room full of vampires, all of whom are dressed in black capes with high collars like a bad Dracula, like a vampire from Scooby Doo.

I also liked that Tad, the Vampire Zombie Werewolf, gets to talk about why this night is so important to him. He wants the vampires to like the vampire part of him, not look down on him for the werewolf and zombie parts.

It also seems like this is the last episode of Vampire zombie Werewolf that has been released. It seems that the series is planned as nine episodes, so that leaves (mental math… wait for it…) three episodes left. It looks like they just finished shooting the rest. I don’t see any information as to when they are scheduled to come out.

“Don’t you think there’s just a little too much Zombie Werewolf in these?”

Time is running out for our web series producer, caught in the grasp of our suburban Vampire Zombie Werewolves.

Again the funniest scene is the flashback, in this case to how our host became a vampire in the first place. There’s also a shout out to fellow web series reviewer Balthazane. Actually, you know what? I think that that’s Balthazane himself playing the vampire in this show! Could that be true?

I think this show is well done, but it could use more funny. If it were just the flashback scenes, I’d probably love it. As it is…

This is one of those series that I don’t really get. It gets heaps of praise from other web series creators and fans, but all of us here at The Watch List who watch it don’t really go for it.
