  • Throwing Stones Ep.5 “Pawn Stars” | A Web Series on The Watch List

    A Teen Horror Web Series.

    3 Swirlies

“Friday night lights. I’m the reason they come.”

Writing for this blog, I have to watch a lot of web series. Like any reviewer, there are times when if I didn’t have to be watching a web series I’d be doing something else. So I think sometimes I can be a little impatient with some episodes. Episodes like this one.

I like this series. I was looking forward to seeing it. I was waiting to see what happened to the girl that got thrown out of the room last episode. Instead, what we got in this episode is a back story to the three remaining characters in the room, back story that could have been delivered with a little less exposition.

I’m beginning to chaff at the fact that I don’t really know what these kids are scared of. What happened to them? Who attacked them? How did it start? I thought that the series would cut between the present and the beginning of the assault, but it hasn’t. At least, not yet. So while I get that they are scared, and I get why they are scared I have a hard time being scared for them. I like them, and I want to see them come out okay - kudos to the script writers - but I don’t feel the jeopardy. Is someone looking for them? Has the killer gone home? Are they being attacked with a knife or a gun or what? All of that matters to make me care if they stay in that room or not.

  • Throwing Stones Ep.4 “Sticks and Stones” | A Web Series on The Watch List

Throwing Stones - Teen Horror Web Series.

“Either you go, or I’ll shove you out there myself.”

The opening teaser of this episode is a lot of gross fun - as the teacher tries to wash blood off his hands with one of those sinks that only runs for a split second before you have to pump the handle again.

The rest of the episode was good… if a little melodramatic. One the strong points of this web series is the acting of the teens. They really connect with me. It’s not an easy feat to sustain that level of emotion over multiple episodes, as short as they may be.

And this is a very short episode. I like where they ended it, a very dramatic break, but I wonder if the creators could have rolled this episode in with the previous one? Given us a slightly longer single episode with a little more time to tell their story.

    “Do you do hugs?”

Guest reviewer Elize Morgan reviewed a more recent episode, so I thought I would start posting episodes from the beginning for those who haven’t seen it.

Anyone But Me is a perpetual fav when it comes to web series. It’s about a lesbian teenager who has to move away from New York, and the girl she loves, because her father became sick after 9/11.

It’s nice that the internet allows different groups to be themselves. If two girls kissed on mainstream TV it would either be pornographic and/or trigger a massive outcry. (See the latest non-controversy over Skins.) Here it is just treated like it is – normal.

I don’t know if I knew this and just forgot or what, but this is a Strike.tv show – the experiment by the Writer’s Guild of America to make web series during the Writer’s Strike back in… was it 2008? Many of those shows were quickly abandoned when the strike was over and the writers went back to actual paying jobs. It’s nice to see Anyone But Me started there and stuck around.

It’s always hard for me approaching a series that I have heard about over and over but haven’t really sat down to watch from the start. This first episode is a lot of set up and a little slice of life-y. We meet the characters, and Vivian moves in with her aunt, and that’s the episode. I’m not too sure where it’s going from here. But it is nice to add another straight drama to the shows we’re covering regularly on The Watch List – even if I just may be the only person who hasn’t seen this show.

  • Ruby Skye PI Ep. 7 “Stalled”

After embarrassing herself again, Ruby still isn’t ready to give up her hunt for the Spam Scammer. She listens in on a phone conversation, catches a book thief, searches a classroom and follows a suspect.

    4 Swirlies

“That’s a whole other scam. A scam of the heart.”

In this latest episode, Ruby is still looking for more suspects. And finds one – oh yes, she does.

A good detective looks for three things: motive, means and opportunity. A good web series has three things: a good story, engaging performers and a style that helps support both.

    This series has all three.

My only hesitation with giving this episode 5 swirlies is that I feel like it has less of that sense of urgency that other episodes in this series has. But we are headed for the home stretch – and I am more than along for the ride.

  • Love Pop Trash – Episode 1

The Huffing Boyz Crew recite a classic monologue from the film Scarface. Miriam & Ani debate on how to get a man.

“Oscar’s not your man. He just likes to play with your boobs.”

What adults think “kids today” do at the mall.

Okay, this probably the only time you’ll hear me say this. This episode’s too short. Maybe if it was the beginning of a longer piece I’d have liked it better.

I’m not a ‘slice of life’ kinda guy. I’m looking for story. Guess I’m looking in the wrong place.

On the plus side the production is slick. It looks and sounds fantastic. The theme song is boopy and fun, even though it feels way too plastic for the subject matter of the show.

I guess the draw here is the shocking truth. I hate to be mean but I found it neither shocking nor ringing especially true. But that could have been the acting.

Or maybe I’m just too old to get it.

Don’t be surprised if you don’t see more episodes posted here.

  • Heather’s Vlog: New Moon

Heather’s dad can’t wait to see New Moon. He also gives advice about how to deal with werewolves. Heather doesn’t seem impressed.

    5 Swirlies

“[Werewolves can't] transform out in the open. You have to be able to tuck your balls underneath inside.”

    Youtube video diary comedy gold.

I stumbled on Heather’s Vlog completely by accident. I gotta tell you, this hysterical series could use a better title.

Cause this is a comedy vlog about a 16 year old vampire and her vampire Dad. Who, in this episode, happens to be obsessed with New Moon.

Once you figure that out (the blink and you missed it intro isn’t much of a help) the episode is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a long time. The Dad’s feeling of community with the porn-for-13-year-old-girls’ film New Moon, his advice for dealing with werewolves, and Heather’s perfect reactions make this a perfect storm of comedy for me.

Maybe I’m over-reacting because of the excitement of discovery. It’s the first perfect 5 I have personally awarded. I think it deserves it, and even more I want you to watch this one. And tell us if you agree with me by leaving a comment.
