  • Microwave Porn Ep.12 “Unhaunted” | A Webseries Review on the Watch List

    A Comedy Web Series

    4 Swirlies

    “Nigel… pretty!”

So much awesome in one webseries episode I can barely begin.

Although, before I get into the awesome, I’ll just say that there’s sort of two stories here that are resolved separately, and could just as easily each made up one episode. After all, (spoiler alert!) The two stories in the end didn’t have much impact on each other.

But let’s get into the awesome: the Yeti is hilarious, both in his own storyline and in the “bonus” scene at the end. I’m also glad the hipster girl made another appearance, her eye rolling “above-it-all”ness is totally pitch perfect. Ash Catherwood is awesome, as usual. Even even more exciting, we get to see Ash in the up-coming season two of Out With Dad. I’m always happy to see Nigel in an episode. And even if this episode was light on the microwave, that’s okay. His willingness to give up Nigel at the drop of a hat is hysterical.

The production is very good, too. It may not look it (which is another way you know it is well done) but there are some difficult shooting and sound conditions - from some snowy woods to the inside of a van. And the whole time, the show doesn’t loose its focus. Comedy has to be presented just so in order for it to work, and these guys do it right so that the jokes feel natural.

“I thought horses only banged chicks on websites. Dave, did you know they could bang each other?”

The first of a two parter for this hilarious web series. One of the joys of this series is that all you have to do is show Allen, the porn addicted microwave, doing anything and its funny. The montage of cottage activities is pretty funny, and its the song that puts it over the top. If you’re watching it at work, this is one to show around to the work colleagues. Tell ‘em you saw it on The Watch List!

As to what happens in the episode, let’s just say that their attempt to have Allen kick his problem cold turkey doesn’t go so well. How are they gonna get out of this one?

“You don’t talk to Nigel! Nigel is my friend!”

This is a weird one – from the odd scene with Nigel “dropping a deuce” and undressing in slow motion to the just slightly not-the-real song “Shove it” to the transitions where Alan the porn addicted microwave talks us through the episode’s structure (“That was the build up.”)

And it is pretty damned funny.

What I liked was the way Alan drives the episode. It is kind of a straight and zany set up, with Dave trying to keep things “normal” until he can stand it no longer and becomes the “zany” one.

Outside of all the porn jokes and the strangeness of it, this is really well constructed series – Dave and Alan will always want different things, but because Alan can’t really do much for himself, he’ll always be up in Dave’s business.

    Nice job, Cancelproof.

“I ain’t heatin’ no dinner, and I ain’t charmin’ no date.”

Before I dive into the review, I’d like point out something. Web series are hard to find.

That’s the big reason why we started the Watch List, to make it easier for you guys to see what’s out there, and hopefully find something you like.

There is a tight knit community of web series creators online. From what I can tell, they largely get to know each other on twitter, organized through various blogs and podcasts devoted to web series. But these groups tend to be as hard to find as web series themselves, and they tend to feature and promote series that have somehow found them. This isn’t a criticism, just a fact of how hard it is for web series creators, fans and promoters to find each other. If you’re not active on twitter, it is really easy to chug along with no idea that there are others out there doing the same things you are.

Microwave Porn is a good example. I happen to know one of the guys behind Microwave Porn. There are really committed to the show and are getting pretty good views on YouTube. But they are not a strong part of the web series communities – at least as far as I can tell. They’re rarely referenced, discussed or shared – but they’re putting out a good show, putting out one every month.

So, congrats to you guys, and sorry for taking so long to throw your episodes up here. The question I want to make is, how can we make it easier for scripted web series to cut through the digital noise on the internet?

That’s enough babble, here’s the review.

The description kinda says it all – this is a series about a guy and his microwave, who happens to be addicted to porn.

This first episode is a good pilot episode, we get to know the characters and the situation without getting a lot of exposition. It’s really well written, even if not a lot happens.

The best part about it, clearly, is the talking microwave, which is brought to life with it’s expressions and voice. The guy himself, Alan, doesn’t have tons to do besides be the straight man to the microwave, so I hope they develop him a little more as the series goes on.

The jokes and gags largely center around the microwave being gross and pervy, but there are touches of strong character elements that I think will grow nicely. There’s a risk of this show being one note, so we’ll see how future episodes develop.

All in all, a strong first episode. They avoid many of the pitfalls of “pilot-itis” as it is sometimes known in the biz, and deliver a strong concept.

  • The Website is Down – Ep. 2: Excel Hell

The Website is Down episode number two! Chip takes us on a wild ride into the life of a master salesman. How many sales can he make in a single video? One? Maybe?

    4 Swirlies

“I’ve used up all the rows in my Excel spreadsheet.”

Mirroring the first episode, the visuals of “Excel Hell” are of Chip, the Sales Guy’s computer screen. It begins with him playing Wolfenstein 3-D, just as Derrick, the Web Dude was playing Halo in the first episode. Apparently, not much ever gets done at PlasTrolTech.

Then after installing software promising him MILF on MILF action, infesting his computer with spyware, he goes on a salescall and has problem entering the information in his Excel spreadsheet – so naturally, he calls tech support.

Anyone familiar with Excel, or really anyone with a pair of working eyes, will be able to tell straight off what his problem is, but what follows is an extremely entertaining exchange between Sales Guy and Web Dude, peppered with hilarious fake pop up ads for everything from ads for used Real Dolls to software from his own company, PlasTrolTech.

Being from Chip’s point-of-view, we see how much of a bullshitter he truly is (even of his Minesweeper abilities) and realize he is a bigger idiot than we previously assumed – so much so that he can’t understand the simplest things about computers – such as even what program he is using.

What should we do with the useless Chips of the world?
