“Whoa! You’re the biggest orange I’ve ever seen!”

Yep, it’s more of the annoying orange, the biggest hit web series on YouTube right now.

I can see why this has done well. It’s exactly what it says it is, it has a neat visual look, and it is easily accessible and infinitely repeatable. I can see office buddies repeating Orange’s catch phrases for days on end.

While the video’s ending is funny in a snickering kind of way, it is exactly the same ending as the previous episode, only with a different fruit. (Is a pumpkin a fruit? Probably not.)

I think the popularity of this video demonstrates the continuing divide for people wanting to make actual, TV like narrative web series. That’s not what people go to YouTube to see - they go to YouTube to be distracted or amused, which is different from being entertained. The Annoying Orange would make a great commercial. But a TV series? Or a movie? What do you do after you already introduced a number of new characters for him to annoy?

    “Hey, Apple!”

Okay, so I went back and caught the very first episode of The Annoying Orange. (At least, I think it is the first one. Does anyone out there know for sure?)

And, you know what? I really didn’t expect to like it, judging by the latest episode, but it was pretty nicely done. It was funny, and it was an orange being annoying. There’s a lot to be said for making an assumed promise to an audience, and delivering. It says Annoying Orange in the title, and in this one, that orange is very annoying. And, as I mentioned before, it’s technically flawless.

So, I wanted to come back and give credit where it was due. It’s easy to see why this caught on.

What I do want to point out is the difficulty in sustaining a gag too long. Where do you go? How do you keep making it fresh? (Call it the Saturday Night Live Syndrome.) I think those challenges are evident in the Happy Birthday one I previously reviewed.

But, as gags go, this first episode is pretty damn funny.

“Dude! We live in a kitchen!”

So, I first heard of The Annoying Orange the other day, and it seems it is the biggest hit on YouTube. I picked one at random and gave it a try.

The execution of this video is flawless. There’s obviously a lot of work put in in assembling the various elements – and take it from me, that sort of stuff isn’t easy. Kudos to them for pulling it off.

But… it’s only 3:47 seconds, but I felt it was long. I kinda felt like the writing was reaching from one gag to another, instead of simply flowing along.

It reminded me a lot of Fred. Maybe it was only Marshmallow’s silly voice. But here’s what else Fred and The Annoying Orange have in common – they’re not for me. Obviously lots of people on Youtube like both those shows, and they’ll both be around for a long time, but I’ll keep hunting.
