“It’s a magic book.”

This episode of the always reliably funny Vancouver web series Naomi The Show is a tiny bit of a departure from the normal format of the series - maybe not intentionally - by having the funniest bits be in the body of the episode and the button by less of a punch line than normal. At least, that’s how I found it.

Despite the somewhat cartoony character of the guy Naomi meets, this episode may not be THE funniest of the series, but it has the most funny moments through out. Noami Dayneswood has some particularly subtlety funny lines. Not that she doesn’t in other episodes, but here she seems less like she’s doing less of the straight set up work than she does in other scenes. She plays her lines to politely annoyed perfection.

“This may seem crazy but I’m having a slumber party. On Saturday night.”

Ha! Even though you see the punch line coming a mile away, these guys really land it. That’s the joy of the show that is Naomi The Show, it’s short, punchy and it always has a strong punch line at the end. The last line never fails to make me laugh - both with genuine humour and with delight.

This show always has strong acting, too. Naomi Dayneswood is always spot on as someone who knows life is out to get her but can’t help herself but hope for the best, even when she’s sure that something awful is about to happen. You can see that tug of war in her, the expectation that this will blow up in her face but she’s too nice to not to get dragged along by the need to politely continue. Her scene partner is always good, but in this case Shane Kolmansberger is really awesome, charming and nuanced as “the buddy” type guy with an agenda.

Noami The Show is sweet, charming and consistently funny.

“Don’t make eye contact.”

Naomi the Show follows a predictable formula, but it is always guaranteed to have a laugh at the end.

This one featuring a gross homeless guy feels, surprisingly, more cartoony than the episode featuring the giant raccoon trying to cop a feel. I did like the shout out to working Vancouver actors, “I did a spot on Stargate Atlantis.” I wonder if that’s true?

What really makes these episode work, all of them, is that Naomi is just too polite to get up and walk away. It works in a short format, where the comedic weight is on the zany characters and Naomi’s reactions to them. I’m not so sure this same character would work in a longer format. Which is actually a compliment; the show’s creators, Naomi Dayneswood and Jennica Harper, did a nice job picking a set up for their show that works for the medium.

I do feel that the only really funny bit is at the end, with the reveal of how the guy “knows” her, and the last coda line. But that’s still pretty funny - and you couldn’t show that on TV!

One of my favourite parts of the show is the music; simple but effective, it conjures just the right mood for the series. Many series, even some well done series, put on a high energy rock track that they like for their credits, not really setting up exactly the same mood as their show itself does.

I do think this is a well done show, and I think it is paying off for the creators. Their show is playing at the Sharpcuts Festival, in Guelph, in three separate web series blocks. Good luck, Naomi!

The best episode yet of this charming web series.

In just over a minute, this episode gives us a nice, little story with strong characters who want something and a beginning, middle and end. There’s a lot of ten minute per episode web series out there who don’t achieve that. And this one’s pretty funny, too.

And the blow line at the end makes me laugh each and every time I think of it. And white the line is funny, it is the timing that really sells it. There’s some amazing comedic talent in Vancouver.

“Aren’t there short models? For smaller clothes?”

I like these cause they’re short and charming. even though the punch line in this one is a little forced, it’s still a nice little moment and we don’t spend too long getting there.

And the production’s strong. Even the sound, which often gets overlooked. Nice job, Naomi and Jennica!

“Okay, six dollars.”

Wow, Vancouver looks beautiful! Okay, I’m easily distracted. But visually, this episode—basically one long shot—was to the point, and had the audience asking way more questions than you’d ever imagine from one shot.

Like, why is the young lady sitting next to a bum? Is that pee running down his jeans? Is that mountain in the background really that pretty? (Yes. Yes, it is.)

All besides the point. But gotta love the attention to visual detail—the audience always appreciates a little extra funny tucked in there by the filmmakers, especially when it concerns character.

Because this episode was less than a minute (almost like a commercial spot), there wasn’t a whole lot of time to get into either character or story—which is why the visual gags become even more important.

Naomi, the young lady/protagonist, doesn’t even speak in this episode, which is a challenging and an interesting choice by the filmmakers. Does it work? I’m not quite sure. I have an inkling of who this character might be, but no overt confirmation.

But this was just a tease—a brief snapshot and joke– setting up the audience’s expectations for the rest of the series, which we imagine will follow Naomi on her day-to-day encounters with weird people in the city of Vancouver?

There’s really not enough to go on based on this first episode, but I’m definitely open to checking out the next one!
