Wow! It’s the season two finale!

Uh oh, Jazzy is in trouble and Ariel is the only one who can save her.

They’re trying really hard to give the series an epic, season finale feeling. It kinda feels like that moment in many comedies realize they need to take it in for a landing.

Still, there’s a bunch of good laughs, and some strong episodes in this season. I think my favourite were from earlier in the season, but still worth watching.

I think this is the first web series that I have reviewed as it came out from beginning to end on the Watch List. Weird.

Hot Girls Ep.7 “Meet Johnny Depp!”

“Don’t call it a mani-pedi. It makes it sound a little gay.”

In this episode, they’re continuing with the “A Christmas Carol” parody of the last one. And there’s an awesome scene that plays on The Shining. But… am I going too far by thinking that putting one parody inside another parody is like mixing your metaphors?

As alway, the episode is really well produced, but not their best episode. I didn’t laugh very much, which is a surprise for The Hot Girls. I guess part of the problem is that “A Christmas Carol” has been done to death, and even a Johnny Depp Look-a-like doesn’t make it feel fresh.

It’s one of their longer episodes, too. Which doesn’t help. Sorry, guys. (Not that they need me to get people to watch them!)

Jasmine gets her eyes uncrossed, and her whole life changes. And Ariel gets a visit of a supernatural kind.

There’s a whole bunch of funny stuff in this episode of the faux MTV faux reality show. While it is still silly and light, it’s entertaining and a good watch. It’s becoming one of my favourties!

I’m still working out the kinks (more on that below) so be careful you don’t watch Episode 4 of Untitled Fiction Project before Episode 3.

As anyone who has glanced at the header can tell, getting these Friday Playlists up and running has been a goal of The Watch List from the beginning.

The philosophy behind The Friday Playlist is to give people a way to watch a selection of the best web series (whether new or just new to us) with very little trouble.

Number one, we’ve already found them. Number two, you can lean forward and browse through. Number three, you can hit play and lean back and be entertained for half an hour or so. Get it up on the big screen, dim the lights, settle back on the couch and hit play.

You know, eventually. Right now, they’re being presented backwards. So later episodes of something on the playlist would autoplay before earlier ones. Like watching a series on DVD but backwards. Sucks.

Hot Girls in Vegas!! Episode 5

“Yes, at this time, extremely dangerous. That’s why I’m looking for one special girl to take a risk with me and jump of the cliff… and sign a waiver freeing me of all liability for undergoing an experimental procedure could save cross-eyed people all over the world.”

A new episode from the guys at The Station, for this fake MTV reality show. In this episode, the girls are in Vega and meet a hunk who promises to cure Jasmine’s crossed eyes.

I feel like this episode is a lot of set-up for what’s coming next. If this is your first time watching this series, I recommend sampling a different episode. There’s a few good jokes, but there’s much funnier episodes.

But wow does it look good! Did they get a whole bunch of money all of a sudden? The other episodes were okay looking, but this one is gorgeous! If anyone knows what changed between episodes, drop a comment!

As always, the pitch perfect parody songs (at least I hope they are parody songs – that’s how they seem to me) are some of the highlights of the episode.

More inspired silliness from The Station!

Hmm… did I miss Episode 2?

The girls time in prison catches up with them on the outside.

The weight of this episode is on the guy in the wig. Normally I don’t go for that sort of thing, but somehow that guy makes okay with the idea that she’s a girl with a beard. Nicely done!

And again, the musical parody is really great! If you listen closely the lyrics are both funny and exactly right for the genre, in this case a “Love Hurts” kinda song.

I really like this show. I may even go track down episode 2.

HOT GIRLS IN PRISON! Season 2 Episode 1 of Hot Girls

“No… I’m pretty sure he was murdered.”

Another of the biggest YouTube channels right now is The Station. I checked out what turned out to be the first episode of the second season of “Hot Girls.”

Right off the top you have to know two things.

One, you really have to commit to watching the whole thing. It’s on the long side, and it drags in places, but the pitch perfect parody of the opening for the Sopranos is worth it – even as long as it is. While it could have been tighter and we would have gotten the joke and moved on, I really respect that they stuck with it and saw the moment through. So set aside the six minutes it’ll take to watch it, and don’t let yourself drift away after ten seconds.

Two, I had a hard time understanding if this was an actual series, or just a sketch parodying reality shows? Each episode has its own title, instead of Hot Girls 2: In Prison! or something. I thought maybe I was watching Episode 1 of the new series, Hot Girls in Prison! But then, I’m not very smart.

There’s a lot to be admired about this episode. It’s well shot, very well edited, and there’s some nice jokes that show the sense of humour in the show is smarter than the rest of the bunch. There’s some call backs, attention to bits (like I said earlier) and some nice character-y stuff going on, like how they think they’ve been hardened by prison, when it’s actually both an affect and manifestation of their eternal shallowness.

I’m pleased to say it is the writing and conceptualization that shines. Besides the two main cast, the acting could be a smidge better. And, like I said, the pacing of the whole episode could be a lot tighter. The last minute or so is an overlong clip trailer for their new season, which I could have done without. And the “previously” clips that starts it, while they set us up for some of the gags and the backstory for the episode nicely, made me impatient – that’s where I almost clicked away.

If it wasn’t for the length and the pacing, I’d probably give them a 4. But I will definitely be watching more. Maybe right now…
