  • Funemployed – Ep 11 – Series FINALE – Gave it a shot.

THANK YOU for following us this past month and making our first ever web series a huge success! It meant so much to see the enthusiasm and positive response. We wouldn’t be able to make these videos without you and your support by watching and sharing with your friends. We couldn’t have asked for more. Thank you.

Though this is the end of “Funemployed” you can be sure that there are many more things ahead for KevJumba and Wong Fu Productions. We’ve learned a lot from this project, and hope that we can make more web series in the future! As long as you want them =)

“Dance To This Song” music video coming TUESDAY Aug 3rd to KevJumba’s channel!!

    “Wait. We won, right?”
“Well I sure hope so! ‘Cos if not then this nice handsome man walked all this way for nothing!”

Surprise, surprise! Judy has dumped Douche (Duke) for Jason!!! Awwww!!! It’s shocking that Judy dated Duke to begin with, he’s so revolting. (“Hey Cindy! Hey, sexy! What’s going on? That looks sexy on you. You should hike it up a bit.” ?? EWW.) She’s so sweet. Well, maybe it’s not so shocking because she’s so nice.

So Kyle, Jason, and Aaron are hanging out at home waiting to see if NigaHiga will show up at their door to announce that they have won the contest (the grand prize: $50,000). Imagine Kyle’s horror when the door knocks and it’s Judy. Then NigaHiga worms his way into their living room to surprise them with the GRAND PRIZE!!!!

I gave this episode 5 swirlies because it really hits home the fundamental thing that drives the whole series, which is also at the heart of the work of KevJumbaKina Grannis, David Choi, NigaHiga, the WongFuProductions crew, and all of the other YouTube celebs that made this series happen. And in the hearts of anybody trying to produce creative work, period. Judy summed it up well in the last episode: “I feel like we all deserve to be excited about what we do.” And the joyous celebration at the end of this episode really makes you see the excitement and passion that has gone behind the entire series. Even if they hadn’t won the prize, the message would still have hit home.

Do what you love, and love what you do!

Now it makes me wanna go out there and make things I wanna make!

Congratulations to Wong Fu Productions and everybody involved on a really funny, inspiring, and thought-provoking webseries!!!!

Quotation to remember: “I feel like we all deserve to be excited about what we do.”

Funny quotation: ”I’ll call you… IF I NEED STABS IN MY BACK.”

This episode opens with Jason on the phone with Judy. Their phone conversation is flirtatious and I feel kind of uncomfortable listening in. Like when you’re on the subway watching a pair of people who interact kind of awkwardly because they both wanna be more than just friends. OBVIOUSLY they have a cursh on each other. ICHHkk!!!! Meanwhile, Kyle waits at the park for ShyBabeNicole to show up to meet him in person.

Kyle stoops to a brand new low when he makes plans with Lois to go to a Justin Bieber concert. He rejects Jason’s attempts at reconciliation, claiming he has a bunch of friends on board with his project and doesn’t need Jason anyway!!!! But when he finds out that Jason quit his job to work on the project, his attitude totally changes, and he’s happy to collaborate and get his best friend back.

How sweet… Jason quit his job for Kyle! The episode ends with a montage of the making of their music video. Things are looking up. This is a pretty feel-good episode. I liked it and I really want them to win the music video contest. I like how much each character values their friendship and really do admire their commitment to pursuing their dreams.

“Stay here as long as you want. We already got eight guys living here. What’s one more?”

A desperate Kyle visits his ex-frat bro Derek, so that he doesn’t have to go back to the apartment he shares with Jason. We meet three obnoxious beer-chugging smelly-looking white dudes from Kyle’s collegiate past. The actors are pretty funny, and there’s some pretty effective/funny camera work. Derek calls Jason uptight and the guys all drink. Kyle’s driven home when one of the guys pukes on his leg.

Then there’s a scene where Kyle (AznStyleKyle) chats with the lone fan of their YouTube channel (shybabenicole143), and they decide they will meet up. This scene’s got a simple piano track to it and is the only place so far where I’ve liked the scoring.

    What a nightmare!

    “WORK SLUT!!!!!”

Kyle and Jason enlist Aaron to help them lay down some tracks for a video they want to enter into NigaHiga’s Blast music video contest. I like this video more than some of their past work because they dive more or less right into the action.

Kyle bumps into Judy, who Jason has been using as an alibi to cover up his dirty little secret. Their lovers’ quarrel is pretty awesome — it’s my favourite performance from Philip Wang in the series so far, and KevJumba is awesome, as usual. David Choi’s facial expressions are pretty hilarious, like a traumatized child caught in the middle of an argument between his parents, who are threatening to divorce each other. Jason swears that he is 100% on board with their video-making project, even though he’s gone and gotten himself a job, and even though he lied about it. But the argument so infuriates him that he ends up abandoning the project altogether.

What’s going to happen? Who is Kyle going to get to replace Jason??? And why isn’t Kyle happy that Jason has a job now (which means he doesn’t have to pay rent/for food??!)

“You made contact with a girl on the Internet?”
    “That’s what the Internet’s for, isn’t it?”

Kyle learns about a contest being run by NigaHiga. The prize is $50,000 for the best music video set to original music. Naturally (“natch”), Kyle decides to enter.

I liked this episode because Kyle featured more prominently. Jason’s not really in this episode because he goes behind Kyle’s back for a secret interview with his former employers. First of all, why does Kyle insist on having Jason on board with the video? He’s un-funny. Second of all, does unemployment really enjoy/require company? Isn’t there more food to eat when somebody is earning money ??? Third, I am not complaining about Jason’s absence here, because Kyle is LOL. So Kyle barges into a music class taught by his cousin Aaron (played by the super talented David Choi) and has no qualms about being mean to a bunch of six/seven-year-olds. The children insist on singing Taylor Swift instead of learning music theory. Aaron happily obliges. Then Kyle performs an obscene song in front of the children. Whoops, inappropriate. The kids are funny actors and have good chemistry with Kyle and Aaron. Then Kyle finally convinces Aaron to help him out with the Blast/NigaHiga contest. Of course Aaron says yes!!!

My biggest question from this episode: Why does Kyle’s hair look so wet? Is this the style ???? Am I totally behind the times? Behind even July 2010, when the video was posted?

Kyle and Jason try to figure out why nobody likes the videos on their YouTube channel. They have videos of them vlogging, rapping, and there’s even one of Kyle kicking Jason’s balls. Kyle insists: at least some people are watching, haters or not. Then Jason has a bit of a stroke of genius — GARAGE SALE!!!!

The garage sale has a bunch of people milling about. Kyle makes a little Russell Peters reference in there… OH! JUICY NEWS! Judy and her asshole boyfriend had a FIGHT. Will Jason take this opportunity and run with it?! Or will he be his low-self-esteemy self and mope sheepishly? I kind of like Judy. She is cute and seems ~authentic~. Whereas I still don’t really buy Jason.

AND… BIG TWIST AT THE END: Jason gets word that his former asshole boss is gone because of a sexual harassment suit, which means Jason might get his old job back.

“We’re gonna make online videos… I had this crazy dream. I saw the future.”

Ew? Kyle wakes up with baked potato chip crumbs on his mouth and looks generally gross. Props to KevJumba for letting us see him in such a state. His job hunt research leads him, naturally, to YouTube, where he watches videos by NigaHiga, whose channel has garnered the following stats:

So Kyle falls asleep again and has a dream/wet dream/premonition/nightmare/fantasy about youtube sensation NigaHiga, who gives him some tips on making quick cash. He hurries to the hot dog stand where Jason is flirting with that girl Judy from the other episode with the asshole boyfriend..

I still can’t get past the awkward soundtrack underscoring most of the dialogue. NigaHiga is pretty funny. I watched some of his videos. He might be some kind of genius because I hear only really smart people can speak that fast. Again, the beginning of this episode was a bit slow-paced. It could have started right into the dream sequence, without the initial setup. Even still, I am curious to see what Kyle and Jason will think up for their videos.

“So you’re quitting. You’re just gonna quit? You’re a quitter now, you’re arrogant, you have low self esteem, and you sell sperm. That’s like a quad fail — you can’t have all four.”

    Sweet! A solid episode!

Kyle helps Jason out by taking on the role of Boss Man in a fake interview. He hits the nail right on the head: JASON, YOUR SELF-ESTEEM SUCKS. Maybe that’s why I don’t like the Jason character — he is sort of painful to watch. Like I’m just not really interested in seeing his mopey self-pity when we could be having Kyle lulz instead. Yup. I like this episode because Kyle features more prominently in it.

The bros end up at the climbing gym to clear their heads and unwind — except we learn that Kyle has a stalker, Lois. First the Cougar froyo woman, now Lois — is there anybody who doesn’t have a crush on Kyle? Maybe just the object of Kyle’s affection: Jason’s mom. I guess we’ll see how this unfolds, as Kyle proposes moving in with Jason and his mom to get out of living at home…

This episode is pretty funny. I LOLed. But I still don’t want to be funemployed.

COUGAR ALERT!!!! I think these guys could have arrived at the meat of the episode a bit earlier. Like they might have just started the episode at the 1:30 mark, when they arrive at Whimsical Yogurt for Jason’s job interview. Instead we have to watch Jason leaf through newswhile Kyle plays video games.

Anyway when the action begins, holy cow! COUGAR ALERT!!!! Whoa! The cougar/prey chemistry between the cougar and Kyle is pretty hilarious. Poor Jason has the limelight stolen for him during HIS interview as the cougar zeros in on Kyle. Sandra Dee Nicholson is pretty LOL as the cougar. She’s over-the-top forward. I don’t know why Kyle doesn’t flee sooner.

    What’s going to happen next ? ?

“It really sounded like you were saying you’re unemployed. And, God that sucks. I mean, ’cause then on top of that you got this really crappy school that you went — I’m sorry. Is this a downer — life — that you live?”

Episode 2 of Wong Fu Production’s Funemployed. Kyle is growing on me, but I’m still not a giant fan of Jason, who comes off as a whiny dink. Perhaps this will change. Kyle is likable and funny, and I like his attitude. I really don’t like the piano score, though. It reminds me of the George-Michael theme in Arrested Development, except that it competes with the dialogue (in a bad way) and doesn’t really add anything to the scenes… I think the better, more believable parts of this episode don’t have any scoring at all.

In this episode we learn that Kyle has a huge crush on Jason’s mom, who is pretty young and sexy (played by Lisa Fleming). Kyle does some weird and creepy gesturing. Then we meet one of Jason’s old crushes and her douchewad of a boyfriend, played by YouTube celebs Kinna Grannis and Chester See. Those guys were believable as the old crush and douchewad boyfriend. The douchey BF drives a Porsche. So now Jason and Kyle are really going to scramble to find work so they don’t get left in the dust.

Where’s the FUN in Funemployed? Hopefully in the next episode…
