This is the part that the series has been building towards, now that it has made it this series is really finding its feet.

Another attempt to catch up on series that we haven’t posted in a while.

More attempts at small level crime to give Captain Blasto something to thwart – except the crimes seem to be slowly taking over from the thwarting.

It’s an interesting idea, the fake villains become real villains and the fake crimes become more elaborate and, ultimately, take more focus than the stopping of the crimes. But there’s almost no dialogue in this episode, and the part about him getting a job as a reporter doesn’t seem to lead any where.

And I’m not sure why each person who will be added to the super villain’s crew is chosen – because the guy gets mad at a parking ticket he’s perfect to help pull off a robbery?

Despite it’s flaws, I’m a sucker for super hero gags, and for the retro comic book appeal of this series. So I’m hooked for at least one more episode, even if just to see them planning the heist.

“You can’t take a baby! That’s kidnapping, not a theft!”

I really like the visual design of the opening titles. Colourful and graphic.

So, here’s where things get moving. A crazy plot is hatched… and suddenly our hero’s life isn’t so boring.

There’s a number of funny bits. What tickles me is that they are staging a fake mugging and because they are inspired by the comics, the “mugger” is dressed up like the bad guys in Scrooge McDuck.

The fake fighting is fun, even if there’s some moments that feel like outtakes that were left in. I still like the comic book split screens, especially where they are used to juxtapose the comic book moments with the reality. What stands to be improved most is the acting. (Something to be said for almost every web series.)

All in all, a fun episode, albeit with an abrupt ending.

3 Swirlies

Slow but interesting start.

Okay, so this series isn’t new, but it is new to me, and that’s good enough for The Watch List.

This first episode has a bad case of ‘pilot-itis’. It’s all set up. In fact, it’ s only half of the set-up – almost a prologue, really. By the end of it, I’m not really sure where the story is going. The preview of the next episode looks funny. Which is something this episode could have used a tiny bit more of. But while we have seen this concept before, I’m a sucker for superhero stories so I’m willing to go along for the ride.

There are a few laughs in it. I did like the “dinner” left out for Colin by his mom. And the use of split screen toward the end, starting at the 4:00 mark, was nice. The layout and style of the split screen had a nice, graphic feel to it, and I admire the fact that they left some panels blank. Many people would feel like they were required to fill each one.

The production looks slick. There’s some nice use of colors. It looks like they put a lot of money into lighting and their sets.

So I’m going to keep posting episodes of Captain Blasto on The Watch List.

When you come across a webseries that you haven’t heard of, do you look at the date it was posted? And if you do,does that affect your willingness to watch it? Leave a comment and let us know!
