31: The Series Ep.7 “Transmission 7″ | A Web Series Review on the Watch List
A Horror Web Series

“Sharp. Bloody.”
After the strong episode 6, episode 7 of this heavily serialized horror web series coasts along again.
So far we have about three and half minutes of the whole story, and I feel like even if I was watching it unfold as a short film it would feel slow. Most scenes in a good feature don’t last more than 3 minutes. It is something of a rule of thumb.
I’m sure this show has an ending in mind, I just hope that they have a few more twists, turns and yes, stuff happening, before we get there.
In the “be nice” column, the shots of the tools and other torture instruments are very nicely shot. I am beginning to think the best thing about this web series is the cinematography.

The Cell Ep. 2 | A Web Series Review on the Watch List
A Psychological Thriller Web Series

“Next time, I burn them off.”
Despite some clunky dialogue and acting, this series rises to its challenges and manages to be better than the sum of its parts.
Part of it is the haunting, if slightly over repetitive music, and some of it is the menace conveyed by “The Woman” who has clearly been terrorized to the point that she has forgotten everything except life with “The Man.” Actually, I was liking it fine until the very last image - which was what really got to me. Just the simple shot at the end of The Woman pushing the clothes across to the other cell. A bold and effective shot, and probably the best part of the episode.

“What makes you so sure you can trust me?”
Another installment of 31: The Series. Sadly, it is still in a stall as it fails to deliver on the promise of the concept, and instead provides 30 second bursts of a single scene, leading it (in my opinion) to be unsatisfying but yet not shocking or surprising enough to leave me anticipating the next one.
Other elements, including production, are fine. I mean, as much as we can see any of it. I wonder if they simply shot all the episodes as one and then chopped ‘em up? Or did they start and stop with each episode?

“How do I know you’re not out there watching me?”
So this one sorta makes rep for the last one. There still isn’t much to it, and I don’t mean because it is 30 seconds long.
The problem with the trapped-inside/buried-alive genre is that the instant the writer and director ease their foot off the panic accelerator, you realize there’s very little for your character to do.
And with only 30 seconds, you have to find some way of keeping the tension up. They deflated their tension last episode. Will they be able to get it back?

“I’m trapped, too!”
Yeah, we know.
After the first two strong episodes, this one stalls out.
The first two achieved a mood and gave new information to the audience. This one does neither. This episode feels like 30 seconds of a longer scene, and not a scene onto itself like episodes one and two.

Camera Obscura Ep.1 “The Book” | A Web Series Review on The Watch List

Episode 1: The Book by Camera_Obscura[NOTE: The above video won't play on non-flash devices. If you don't see a video, click here to watch!]
“Was your grandpa into anything weird?”
A surprisingly poignant beginning to a demon horror type web series.
For some reason, the player was wonky – very grainy and stuttered a lot. I guess they were going for a washed out look, but did they shoot it so low rez?
A nice, teasing start that front loads the appearance of the demons. They could have gone for mood and delayed the first sight of the demons, but on the web sometimes it is a good idea not to make people wait. So I think they probably made a good choice by saying, “Look! There’s your demons!” And then letting the story start naturally.
The music is nice. The characters are nicely introduced and pretty well defined. The back story comes out naturally in the scene – there’s some tight writing.
I really liked the spooky pictures found in the Grandfather’s book. I also think the teaser was nicely used – we see the Grandfather doing his thing and then we see Claire mourning his death and packing up his belongings.
I guess what I think could be a lot stronger is the ending of this episode. What it could have used is a little more of a shape to the story for this episode.
Searching for new series to add to The Watch List, I’m coming across way more scifi and horror than comedies these days. Is it possible that comedy web series – true series with continuing characters, not sketch comedy – is on a wane?

“Clones are accused of being emotionally shallow. But what’s my excuse?”
Wow, quite a change from both earlier episodes.
While still being visually unique, and having a couple of amazingly drawn backgrounds, this episode shrugs of the patient pacing and suspenseful mood of the first two in favor of an extended gun battle.
The action sequences are less than convincing. And it seems neither a professional killer with a machine gun or trained police officers are very good shots.
There’s a scene with the screamed sergeant guy who pull them off yet another case - I think that’s three in three episodes.
It was only the short, final scene that is sticking with me. Not only are we back to what was working in episodes one and two, we get a little backstory in there that gives the character some depth. Nice touch.
I also like that they continue to explore the relationship between clones and their “originals.” Interesting stuff that I hope they go further with.

The Uninfected Ep.1 “Hardcore” | A Web Series Review on The Watch List
A Zombie Horror Web Series
3 Swirlies
“I think he gave me the rabies.”
I don’t usually like long opening credits on web series, but this one’s great. Sets exactly the right mood. And at 45 seconds, it is not all that long.
The dialogue recording could be a lot better - as could the sound editing.
This show threatens to be yet another ‘what if the zombies come’ series, But with what could be an interesting twist - the zombie fighters are in a hardcore band. Who will live? Who will die? The web site keeps track of the survivors.
The beginning is a little rough. But once the people start going all zombie it really picks up. Okay, once the second guy goes zombie it really picks up.

Vampire Mob S01E03 “Castle on the Left” | A Web Series Review on The Watch List
A Vampire Hitman Comedy Web Series

“Moving in? Oh, I would just stake her right now.”
More troubles for our vampire hitman as he gets ready for his mother-in-law to move in.
This is very serialized show. Many web series are. I wonder if maybe that’s one of the reasons that web series in general have a hard time breaking through to the mainstream - they’re too short for a real self contained story, but they are often released on a TV schedule.
Just musing. Thoughts?

This web series starts off with a gripping, if a tiny bit awkward, opening scene. The first episode really rests on the drama of that one opening scene, and in the mystery of what it meant - a mystery both to the main character and to the audience. The intent of this series is to set up a mystery that its viewers try to solve. Such is the legacy the Lost has given to web series.
Shooting wise, the mix of “found footage” and web cam video with what I assume is more standard “invisible third person” footage is a little confusing because it is hard to tell which is which. All in all it is competently produced. The sound is actually quite well done. But there wasn’t enough in this first episode to really grab me. If you loved Lost, then you really might want to dig in to this series.
