  • Space Hospital S02E07 “The Egg and I” | A Web Series Review on The Watch List

    A Sci-Fi Comedy Web Series

“Barbara, however, is a patient, and should not be relaxing.”

    Trippy.

To be clear - this cliffhanger episode of the science fiction comedy web series Space Hospital is NOT the season finale. I guess it is the mid-season hiatus. More episodes are coming down the pipeline.

I’ve talked a lot about this series, which leaves me with very little to say. I love it - it just makes me happy. Nurse Barbara gets a lot of screen time, which is great. Her reaction to the egg, part connection and part revulsion, is spot on. The android valet looks awesome. The nun’s prayer is hilarious. I love the props and the set dressings. The openning shot, the way they worked in the title, is a lot of fun.

I have to say, the sequence with Lindsey, the half android, was confusing to me - but I don’t really remember the events in the first season that led to her creation in the first place. Maybe I missed an episode? I remember the bionic tennis player…

This is a funny episode, more plotty than gaggy, and it moves pretty fast. It adds some surprising twists to the Space Hospital story - not to missed if you’re a fan of the show!

    From YouTube Description:

Re: Giant Easter Egg, minus Easter…

Space Hospital gets religion in the form of a sexy nun and her cyborg valet, just as Nurse Barbara battles depression over her recent maternal disaster. Meanwhile, Yeoman Long ponders the true meaning of her death, resurrection and return to the hospital and the unsettling secrets hidden deep in her own programming.

“It’s good to meet a fellow super sentient mollusk. We should hang out some time.”

Awesome. This episode ties up one big plot line from this season and brings another one front and center to set up for the next episode – the last of season 2!

Epic jokes to watch out for: Scanner reference, big fake, prop rocks meta humour, Omacron suggesting a “five way.”

    From YouTube Description:

Re: Robot Love, Deep Space Cuisine on a Budget…

As Space Hospital is threatened with absorption into the digestive tract of a giant space mollusk, a slightly less sinister threat still stalks the shadowy halls of the ship, making hapless nurses its victim. Can the newly revived Doctor Omacron cheat fate and save the crew?

“Is Nurse Barbara a nurse again or is just hanging around?”

What a great episode of Space Hospital, even though it more of a bridge episode with a cliffhanger (actually two of them) than a self contained story.

It’s a long one, but a lot happens. And it’s awesome slash hilarious stuff – from the Space Hospital running afoul of a nebula monster, to the whole break room scene that leads to Omicron’s Return, this episode lives up to the wackiness that has been series two of Space Hospital – and some great retro-y special effects.

    From YouTube Description:

Re: Proper conduct in the breakroom…

Space Hospital reaches the center of the dark star nebula, where a harsh judgment awaits the already beleaguered crew. Who will rise to challenge the moral authority set before them? Who indeed.

“The Centrality does not negotiate with zombies! Or patients, for that matter.”

Another hilarious but somewhat rough episode of Space Hospital. In one scene, you can clearly see the boom mic at the bottom of the frame. I mean, it is not peeking in or “pushing” the edge of the frame, as boom ops say. It is full on in the shot and waving around… twice!

But for all its rough edges, Space Hospital is constantly funny. While it might not be for people who don’t already love science fiction, it is just so out and out enjoyable that I kinda don’t care about things like the occasional boom in the shot. Of course, the whole retro sci-fi look and feel makes it easier to accept production slips.

This episode has some of the funniest one liners of the series, and it pays off a bunch of set-ups from previous episodes, including the guns. The zombies are a lot of fun, too. I like the opening teaser that includes an ad for “Zombie Hospital” featuring free de-braining. Just before the zombie fight breaks out, Dr. Larry dramatically orders the computer to engage the fight music. Not the very best episode from Space Hospital, maybe, but one of the funniest.

“Turning dead patients into new patients could be a big boost in profits to Space Hospital if we could just figure out who to bill.”

There’s a whole heck of a lot going on in this episode - Space Hospital always could pack in the story - but man is it funny!

It feels like their pieces missing, a couple of times the plot jumps around and I’m not sure what the character’s are talking about, exactly. I’m also not 100% sure who the zombie guy at the end is supposed to be. Am I supposed to recognize him? Is it supposed to be a mystery? I’m really not sure.

There’s a lot of great bits. The gun having a communicator function. Nurse Radknee’s reaction to Draco’s transformation. Sneed trying to interrupt the zombie from snitching on him. All hilarious.

As the hospital ship drifts deeper into the misty corridors of the sprawling dark nebula, mysterious occurrences threaten the sanity and very lives of the crew, not to mention a precarious relationship or two. Investigation uncovers more than one skeletal revelation in long forgotten cupboards, with assurances of more to follow. Some must face their sorted past. Others their murky future. None are safe.

  • Space Hospital S02E02.5 “Curse of the Draco” [Part 2] | A Web Series Review on The Watch List

“Dr. Drake is the new chief of staff… and the father of my baby.”

I didn’t realize the last episode was a two parter.

This season seems much more focused on the long arc than the individual episodes, but at the same time the episodes are still strong each on their own.

Part two of Curse of the Draco has a lot of nice gags and a really amazing space battle scene, with some of the best visual effects that this series has done. Very impressive.

It ends on a darker note - but still funny. I’m eager to see where they’re going with this. I also like how they are continuing to build on the mythology of the first season.

    From YouTube Description:

Re: Intergalactic Battle Fatigue, Effects of…

Newly appointed Dr. Drake must navigate the murky recesses of Dr. Goode’s mind just as Space Hospital attempts to navigate the murky outskirts of the dark nebula while bombarded by the relentless Dracos. Now reunited with her half-robot offspring, Nurse Ratknee reveals a further truth with frighteningly technological implications for a troubled and confused Yeoman Lindsay Long.

“Why this old thing? It’s a baby.”

I love that Lovable Robot gets more screen time in this season.

Nurse Ratknee discovers that she has a son/daughter in this episode that builds on Space Hospital mythology. Hilarious as always. The first half, dealing with the return of Nurse B. Arbabra, the addition of Dr. Draco and the ongoing attack on Space Hospital, was the purely funniest, and the second half reveals the back story behind the new character for this season, the eye patch wearing Lyndsay Long.

I’m constantly blown away by the set. Not only is it awesome retro-future awesomeness, but it must be giant! There’s a wonderful shot where the camera dollies through a wall from one room into another. I wonder where it was built? Was it a large basement? I would be very surprised to hear they rented a studio for the build, because then they’d have to store it and rebuild it for season two - a little known fact of production is that it costs almost as much to store a set between seasons as it does to build it in the first place.

    From YouTube Description:

    Re: Evolution: Fact or Fancy?…

Re: Proper work attire for gender-ambiguous androids…

Love revisits Space Hospital with a vengeance, dark and ominous. Nurse Ratknee’s old rival returns with a new suitor and a poorly kept secret. Yeoman Long reveals the true circumstance of her recent engagement as newest crewmember, and is unexpectedly reunited with an (emotionally) distant relative. Meanwhile, the ship is left vulnerable to attacking Draconoid forces while drifting all too close to an ominous dark nebula.

“All your patients are belong to us.”

I was holding off starting season rwo of Space Hospital because I was pretty sure I would love it. And I do.

There’s been some cast changes, which were written into the show. If you want a little background on the in story changes between the two seasons, you can check out this prologue…

They’ve definitely stepped up the production. Maybe they just wanted to have a big first episode for the season, but there’s a lot more special effect shots and model scenes than in the average season one episode. They have two robots now, and they both work a lot better than Lovable Robot did in the first season. There’s also a new rival hospital, Ape Hospital. I hope they use the apes as an ongoing adversary.

I know I tend to gush about this show, so just as a balance I’ll make a point of mentioning something I think could be a lot better - the acting. I feel, in particular, that some of the better actors from season one are no longer with the show. It also seems like they have reduced the cast, maybe due to what seemed to be some hurried production in the first season. Less cast in any scene will make that scene go by a lot quicker.

The real strength of the series is the writing. Will it win a Pulitzer? No, but as I’ve mentioned in previous reviews, being able to tell a tight story with a strong beginning, middle and end and work in a bunch of gags and jokes isn’t as easy as many starting out web series creators think.

Still one of my favourite shows, for whatever flaws it may have - and in some cases even because of them. You’ve got a lot of gushing to look forward to!

“I have heard many alarming reports of your wacky doctor hijinks. We’re at war, here people. We have to do our paperwork.”

This is the first episode of awesome web series Space Hospital that I didn’t love.

It also appears to be the last one in season one, but there’s already a whole season two just waiting to be watched, so I’m not worried.

This episode feels like it was slapped together, and lacks the tight story of all the previous ones. It focuses on a guy from home office who comes to set things straight, and it makes the episode pretty muddy.

  • Space Hospital Ep.6 “Half Dozen of the Other”

Re: Sex and the Single Alien-Brain Symbiote

As Space Hospital’s enemies plot their revenge, Nurse Barbara and Nurse Ratknee weep profusely over the injured Dr. Omacron. But how can one doctor court two nurses at once? Romance is in the air as these two pairs of lovers get to know each other over the course of one eventful and surprising evening.

“You’ll need to baste it in the cerebral juices.”

Wow, this show has what has to be the least informative “previously on” sequence I have ever seen. I think maybe that was the point.

Once again, Space Hospital manages to nail both the science fiction elements and the comedy. Oh, and they have a song. Amazing.

Oh, and then there’s the creepy shot of the symbiote reattaching itself to the host body.

One of the better produced and simpler episodes, it still occasionally suffers from less-than-stellar production elements. But freakin’ hilarious.
