“Gertrude? That’s a really pretty name.” “Thanks, I go by Gert.” “Gert. Gert. That’s even prettier!”
Warning: this post is going to reveal my shocking obliviousness to youtube trends and youtube culture.
Over Christmas turkey, I asked my cousin Peter what he watches on TV. Since he’s in high school, he doesn’t watch TV. He watches stuff online. All of the entertainment he consumes is done on the same school-issued laptop he uses for his English homework. And since he’s in high school, he’s looking inward and outward, trying to piece together his identity. The main question for him, it seems, is this: What does it mean to be a young Chinese guy in North America today?
The answer????? Wong Fu Productions I had no idea that they had such a big following. I think I’d watched their short, Yellow Fever, a couple of years ago. I rewatched it today. While the production is kind of cheezy, it’s cool that these guys are making stuff, and offering some Asian-American perspective in the sea of whiteness that, for the most part, constitutes youtube.
For Funemployment, WongFuPro’s teamed up with KevJumba (a giant youtube celeb? pardon my ignorance). KevJumba (who plays Kyle) frankly outshines Philip (who plays Jason). Good call on getting a major youtube celeb on board with your webseries, guys.
In the first episode, Philip and Jason get themselves fired. What happens next? We’ll find out soon.
